Regulation of vascular tone, molecular mechanisms.

چکیده
V ASCULAR tone, a state of maintained contraction of the smooth muscle in the vessel wall, is the process by which the blood vessel carries out its physiologic functions, its pharmacologic responses, and its pathologic changes. Current research directed at an understanding of the molecular mechanisms that regulate vascular tone is progressing at a rapid rate. The state of this art was surveyed in 1980 by the American Physiological Society’s 686-page Physiology Handbook, Section 2, Volume II, “Vascular Smooth Muscle.” The current review should satisfy those who have in mind a less extensive compilation of information. It also describes new pieces of the puzzle that have been found since the Handbook went to press over a year ago. In the broadest sense, pieces of this puzzle are sought to complete two quite different pictures, both depicting the affairs of calcium. The first deals with the role of calcium in the regulation of the contractile proteins; the second with the function of cell membranes in the regulation of myoplasmic calcium concentration.

Vascular Aging and Diseases: Molecular Mechanisms and Influences
Vascular aging plays an important role in the mortality of the elderly, but vascular aging can be dependent on other factors such as diseases. Various diseases such as Alzheimer, diabetes, thalassemia, and other diseases affect the mechanisms of vascular aging. It will harm the recovery process of these patients. There are methods for measuring vascular aging such as instrumental measurements a...
متن کاملHydrogen Sulfide: Potent Regulator of Vascular Tone and Stimulator of Angiogenesis
Hydrogen sulfide is the "third" gasotransmitter on the rise in cardiovascular research. Recent studies show that hydrogen sulfide has a great potential in the regulation of vascular tone of systemic arteries and many molecular targets are discussed. However, the complex mechanism of vascular tone regulation by hydrogen sulfide is only incompletely understood. It seems that a potent interaction ...
متن کاملAstrocyte regulation of cerebral vascular tone.
Cerebral blood flow is controlled by two crucial processes, cerebral autoregulation (CA) and neurovascular coupling (NVC) or functional hyperemia. Whereas CA ensures constant blood flow over a wide range of systemic pressures, NVC ensures rapid spatial and temporal increases in cerebral blood flow in response to neuronal activation. The focus of this review is to discuss the cellular mechanisms...
متن کاملA process-based review of mouse models of pulmonary hypertension
Genetically modified mouse models have unparalleled power to determine the mechanisms behind different processes involved in the molecular and physiologic etiology of various classes of human pulmonary hypertension (PH). Processes known to be involved in PH for which there are extensive mouse models available include the following: (1) Regulation of vascular tone through secreted vasoactive fac...

J Appl Physiol 100: 739–743, 2006; doi:10.1152/japplphysiol.01044.2005.—Reactive oxygen species have multiple effects on vascular cells. Defining the sources and the impact of the various reactive oxygen species within the vessel wall has emerged as a major area of study in vascular biology. This review will focus on...
